Case study / Japanese cake studio
Kumo Cake Studio
The business and what it needed.
Kumo Cake Studio makes Japanese cakes for preorder pickup in North Harbour. The product is specific: airy sponge, fresh whipped cream, restrained sweetness, and a small menu that changes with the pickup calendar.
The previous site made customers work too hard to find the next pickup date and understand what made the cakes different.
The direction and why.
The site needed to feel as light and considered as the product. Warm paper, dark ink, and one dusty pink note create a quiet editorial frame. The hero gives equal weight to the cake itself and the short explanation of what makes it Japanese in style.
Specific decisions.
- 01A useful type contrast
The display serif is soft and generous at large scale. Compact sans serif labels handle navigation, ordering, and product facts so the page remains practical.
- 02Pickup before browsing
The next-order information sits in a persistent top line, and the main header keeps an order action visible. Customers can act without first moving through the brand story.
- 03One product, properly explained
The hero photograph is paired with a signature-cake card and a short ingredient description. Menu, catering, gallery, and story remain available without crowding the first decision.
